Frequently Asked Questions

What options do I have to charge my electric car?

Basically, we divide charging into two categories: slow charging (at AC stations) and fast charging (at DC stations). If we’re talking about plug-in hybrids, these mostly only allow slow charging, and you’ll also find fast charging in some of the more expensive models. But standard, fully electric vehicles can be charged with both slow AC charging and fast DC charging. You can charge your electric car at home, by buying a charging station and installing it at your home, or you can charge it at publicly available charging points on the ejoin GO network.

What are the types of charging connectors?

Keep in mind that AC charging uses a different type of connector than DC charging. Different connectors are used for charging in different parts of the world.

However, they are standard within Europe:

  • Type-2 connector for slow AC charging
  • CCS2 connector for fast DC charging

All electric cars produced in Europe are and will be produced with these charging connectors, a standard agreed by all car companies. Especially when buying used models, it is important to check which connector the electric car is equipped with. For example, some older EVs made in Asia used the CHAdeMO connector for DC charging, which are only sporadically available in Europe anymore. Currently, there is still one model sold in Slovakia exclusively with a CHAdeMO connector – the Nissan Leaf.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

This is a question to which there is no single answer. The charging speed of an electric car depends on many factors – the size of the battery, the charging method, the maximum charging power of the electric car and also the temperature of the battery. EVs can be charged at slow AC stations and fast DC stations.

Slow AC stations are mostly produced with a maximum power of 22 kW. However, not every electric car can be charged at its maximum capacity on a slow AC station. This is determined by the on-board charger of the electric car, which converts the AC current of the AC station into DC and sends it to the battery of the electric car. So if you charge at a station that declares a maximum output of 22 kW, but your electric car’s on-board charger is only 11 kW, your electric car can be charged at a maximum output of 11 kW. The charging power can also vary during the charging process.

Fast DC stations are produced in a large range of maximum outputs. They usually start at 50 kW but can go up to 600 kW. With a DC station, you charge the battery of the electric car directly with DC current and are therefore not limited by the on-board charger. However, you are still limited by the battery itself and what maximum charging power it can accept. By default, EVs can charge at a maximum power of around 150 kW, but some models can now charge at 300+ kW. Again, the charging power varies throughout the charging process and does not maintain the maximum power throughout the charging period. Always check the EV dealer’s website for information on the maximum possible charging power of the vehicle.

Which charging station should I buy for my home?

We have several suitable products for charging at home. The cheapest and easiest solution is our LITE charging station. If you want to manage the station using a mobile app and access smart features, we offer the HOMEBOX station. If you are a person who spends a lot of time on the road and don’t want to be left unprepared, we offer the PORTY portable charging station.

Which charging station should I buy as a fleet company?

One of our smart configuration stations is required to access charging history and individual user data. For AC charging these are the SINGLE and DUPLO stations, for DC charging the RAPIDBOX or RAPID. Our recommended solution is the PORTY station in the PORTY FLEET configuration. This solution was developed by us directly for company fleets. It is a portable charging station with which the employee can charge either at the company, at home or at any public station fitted with a Type 2 socket. PORTY FLEET has 4G connectivity, GPS locator and communication via OCPP protocol. Thanks to this, the fleet manager can see all the data about the employee’s charging and can use it both for further cost accounting

I have a hotel, a restaurant, I run an amusement park, what charging station should I buy?

If you want to buy a charging station as an investment and sell the charging on it, you need a station with an online connection, a form of authorisation and a display. We have business solutions for both slow AC stations and fast DC stations. For AC stations, these are SINGLE and DUPLO, for DC stations RAPIDBOX, RAPID, RAPID TERMINAL. Of course, our qualified team can help you with the right choice for your business, who will conduct a site survey and communicate with you the exact options at your location. We can also install a payment terminal to the charging stations for easy payment or power control so that the reserved capacity at a given location is not exceeded.

Where can I find a map of your charging points?

An up-to-date map with information on the availability of charging points can be found in our ejoin GO mobile app, on our website in the Charging Station Map section, as well as on the portal.smartfuelpass.com website.

How do I register in your network?

You can register for the ejoin GO network on the portal.smartfuelpass.com website or via the mobile app. Once you have created an account, you need to conclude a Charging Services Agreement (I want to use the charging services).

How do I authorise and pay for charging?

You can easily authorise charging via the mobile app. Select the desired charging point on the map, the amount you want to charge for and start charging. We’ll reserve the amount you enter and only charge the amount actually charged, the rest will be refunded immediately after charging.

Can I charge at your station without registering?

Yes, there is a QR code on each station. After scanning it, your device’s browser will redirect you to a web page with the station’s connectors. If you want to charge without registering, simply select the option to charge as a non-registered user and pay for the charge using your credit card. At some selected locations we have also installed a payment terminal where charging is even easier. Charging for non-registered users is more expensive.
